The way the keys are laid out seems
pretty silly, especially if you are
right-handed. There was originally a
reason for this inefficient pattern.
The first typewriters were prone to
jamming if the typist pressed certain
key cominations too quickly. The
key layout was changed to make typing
slower, and this pattern, called
QWERTY, (named after the keys in the
second row on the left) became the
standard!
There is a faster layout called
Dvorak. (Pronounce it Dvor-jack.)
